The callouts are
in the budget
the price shoppers ate.

Emergency plumbing and scheduled plumbing are two different businesses wearing one trade name. Run them in one ad group on one budget — which is what almost every plumber's account does — and the cheap clicks spend the money that should have caught the 11pm burst geyser.

One ad group cannot serve
a burst geyser and a bathroom quote.

These two searches look similar in a keyword tool and behave nothing alike in a real account.

Emergency

“burst pipe near me”

Decided before the search starts. They are not comparing three quotes — they are phoning the first plumber who answers. Converts on the phone or not at all. Peaks after hours, on weekends, and in cold snaps. Being fourth on the page is being nowhere.

Scheduled

“bathroom plumber quotes”

A considered purchase. Three quotes, a week to think, a form rather than a call. Cheaper clicks, far more of them, and a close rate measured in weeks. Perfectly good work — on a different budget, a different ad, and a different definition of a conversion.

What happens when they share a budget: the scheduled keywords have higher volume and lower CPCs, so they win the auction more often and drain the daily budget by mid-afternoon. The emergency searches — the ones worth the most per call — arrive at 9pm to an account that has already stopped serving.

How a plumbing account
actually gets structured.

Four kinds of work, four different jobs to do. Not one campaign called “Plumbing”.

01

Emergency & after-hours

Burst pipes, blocked drains, leak detection, no water. Own budget, own bids, own ad schedule with bid increases when your competitors' offices are shut. Call assets and tap-to-call carry the conversion — the form is a fallback, not the goal.

02

Geysers

Repair, replace, element and thermostat, solar and heat-pump conversion. The highest-ticket recurring search in South African plumbing, and the one where intent splits hardest between a homeowner paying cash and a homeowner claiming from insurance. Those two need different ads.

03

Scheduled & installation

Bathrooms, renovations, pipe replacement, water-pressure and pump work. Form-led, longer cycle, and the group where a quote request is the conversion. Judged on cost per quote that turns into work — not on lead volume.

04

Commercial & body corporate

Complexes, retail, offices, maintenance contracts. Low volume, long cycle, and by far the highest value per win. Deserves its own keywords and its own patience — it will never look good on a 30-day cost-per-lead report, and it should not be judged on one.

The insurance point matters more here than most people expect. A burst geyser in South Africa is frequently an insurance claim, and insurers route those claims to their own panel plumbers. So “geyser insurance claim” is either your most valuable keyword or a complete waste of money, depending entirely on whether you are on a panel. Same search, opposite answer, and it is the first thing worth establishing before a cent goes near it.

The searches that look like
plumbing work and are not.

This is where most plumbing budgets actually go. Real examples from the negative keyword list a plumbing account launches with — not a sample, the categories that cost the most.

People who want your job, not your service

plumber jobs · plumbing vacancies · plumber salary · plumbing apprenticeship · plumbing courses · plumbing qualification · PIRB registration

People fixing it themselves

how to unblock a drain · how to fix a leaking tap · replace geyser element yourself · diy · youtube · step by step

People buying parts

geyser price · plumbing supplies · pipe fittings · tap wholesale · builders warehouse · for sale

People who will never book you

cheapest plumber · plumber rates per hour · free quote calculator · municipal water problem · who is responsible for

Two things worth knowing about negative keywords, because getting them wrong quietly undoes the work. They do not match close variants — blocking course does not block courses, so both forms have to be listed. And a phrase negative only blocks a contiguous run of words, which is why a tidy-looking list is often a list that has stopped working.

A click is not a lead,
and a lead is not a job.

The conversion is a tracked call, not a form

Emergency plumbing converts on the phone. If the account counts form submissions, it is measuring the smaller half of the business and optimising toward it. Call tracking with a minimum duration — a call that lasts long enough to be a real job, not a wrong number — is what the bidding should be fed.

Sometimes the right move is to count fewer leads

On one account we cut the number of conversions the system was allowed to count, on purpose, by importing only the calls that qualified. Reported lead volume went down. Booked jobs went up, because the bidding stopped chasing the cheap calls that were never going to become work. A report that looks worse and a business that does better is the trade worth making.

The number that decides it is cost per booked job

Cost per lead is easy to improve and easy to fake — loosen the match types and it falls. Cost per booked job cannot be gamed, which is why it is the number on the report. It also means we need to know what happened after the phone rang, so part of this is agreeing how you will tell us.

One caveat from the documented account: part of that plumber's return came through Local Services Ads, a Google channel that is not available in every market. We could not confirm it is live in South Africa, so an SA plumbing build assumes Search and call tracking only. If it does become available here, it changes the plan — but nothing should be budgeted on it until it does.

Read this part before you read the numbers. That account is in the United States, in dollars, on a budget larger than most South African plumbers run. Different CPCs, different competition, a channel we may not have here. It is evidence that the method works when it is measured properly — it is not a promise about your account, and anyone who shows you a foreign case study and implies otherwise is selling you something. What plumbers actually ask.

How much should I spend to make this work?

Enough to be present when the emergencies happen, which is the part that cannot be faked. A budget that runs out by lunchtime is not a small campaign — it is an absent one. We would rather start you narrow, on fewer suburbs and fewer keywords with proper coverage, than spread thin across a metro and lose every auction that mattered. The audit tells you which of those you are currently doing.

I already get work from word of mouth. Why advertise?

Word of mouth cannot be turned up when a quiet month arrives, and it does not reach the person whose geyser burst tonight and who has never heard your name. Search is the only channel where somebody is actively looking for exactly what you do at the moment they need it. If referrals are carrying you, ads are the thing that makes the quiet months stop being quiet.

I tried Google Ads before and it was a waste of money.

Most plumbers who say this have the same three things in the account: one ad group covering every kind of plumbing work, no call tracking, and no negative keyword list. That combination reliably spends money on job seekers, DIYers and price shoppers, and then reports it as leads. The free audit will show you which of the three applied to yours.

Do I need a website for this?

You need a page that loads fast on a phone and puts your number where a panicking homeowner can hit it. That is a lower bar than a full website, and if it is what is standing between you and running ads properly, say so — it is worth solving before spending on clicks that land somewhere slow.

What does it cost and am I locked in?

Management starts at R3,500 a month. No lock-in contract, month to month, and the ad spend stays in your own Google Ads account under your own billing — so if you leave, you keep the account, the history and the data. See the pricing tiers →

Will you work with another plumber in my area?

No. Bidding two clients against each other in the same auction raises both their costs and only one of them can win the click. Ask any agency this question before you sign anything.
